Real Madrid and Chelsea to Champions League QF

Spanish La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over French Ligue 1 side Lyon at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The 3-0 result came after the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Lyon.

The trip to the quarters breaks a streak of six-straight round-of-16 defeats for Real Madrid.

Brazil international fullback Marcelo opened the scoring in the 37th minute after playing a give-and-go with Cristiano Ronaldo at the edge of the penalty area before cutting past a defender and firing past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

That was how the score stayed until the 66th minute, when Karim Benzema made it 2-0 in the game and 3-1 on aggregate. Benzema ran onto a long ball from the back from Marcelo and slotted through Lloris.

Angel Di Maria put the game and series out of reach in the 76th minute when Mesut Ozil headed a through-ball to him behind the defense. Di Maria cooly slotted home for his second Champions League goal of the tournament.

In the other Champions League match, Chelsea and FC Copenhagen battled to a 0-0 draw in London. Chelsea advances to the quarters thanks to a 2-0 victory at FC Copenhagen in the first leg.
