We are going to Wembley! — Red Devils
Manchester United set up a rematch of the 2009 Champions League final with Barcelona on Wednesday, securing a 4-1 win over Schalke at Old Trafford to advance to the final on aggregate, 6-1.
The Red Devils brought a 2-0 lead from the first leg into their second leg encounter, and started well with goals from Antonio Valencia and Darron Gibson in the first 30 minutes.
Schalke pulled a goal back in the 35th minute through Jose Jurado, but Anderson tallied a third goal for the hosts in the 72nd and added another a few minutes later.
United has now reached the final of the Champions League for the third time in four years, and they will face Barcelona at Wembley Stadium on May 28.
The opening goal arrived after 26 minutes with Gibson supplying a nice through ball to Valencia, who got into the penalty area and rolled the ball inside the far post.
Valencia then returned the favor a few minutes later, dropping the ball back to Gibson at the top of the box for a low shot that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer parried off the post and into the net.
A turnover in the back by United’s Chris Smalling allowed Jurado to pull a goal back for the German side before halftime, but Anderson killed the game off with two goals in a three-minute span to send United comfortably through.
